ANSWER WRITING_ETHICS- GS-4

1.“In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. And if they do not have the first, the other two will kill you.” – Warren Buffett.
What do you understand by this statement in the present-day scenario? Explain. (150 words)

Ans: The above statement highlights the importance of integrity. Integrity means the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. It is the cornerstone of all ethical values. It is true that
integrity without knowledge and energy is weak and useless but knowledge and energy without integrity is dangerous and dreadful.

While knowledge and energy are the essential components of an organisation but the outcome or success of the organisation depends upon the individual's integrity. Take the example of Cyber-attacks, terrorism, etc. Although the people involved have high energy and intelligence, but lack of integrity makes them do these dangerous crimes. People like Vijay Mallya or Nirav Modi are both intelligent and energetic but lack of integrity has proved dangerous to both of them and the country.

Hence, integrity holds primacy over all other values. It gives the direction and purpose to our intelligence and energy.  It can be promoted through moral education, increasing transparency, following code of ethics, developing a system to award integrity, etc.

2. What do the following quotation mean to you in the present context?
“Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding.” – Mahatma Gandhi. (150 words)

Ans: The above statement highlights the role of anger and intolerance in impacting the correct understanding of an individual. Anger is the disease that not only increases mental stress but also decreases the physical condition of an individual. Intolerance is the unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behaviour that differ from one's own. An angry person may also cause both psychological and physical damage to himself or herself as well as his/her family. Anger makes a person to
loose his patience and thus slowly become intolerant. Anger and intolerance does not allow rational thinking and people take up extreme steps.

Cases like mob lynching, communal classes, acid attack, etc in the society are the results of anger and intolerance. Anger and intolerance can be controlled by speedy Justice delivery, persuasion by leaders, celebrities and well-known personalities, check on social media and provocative sites/platforms, efforts of government, public awareness, value based education, etc.
